carmine st. eats

New York Times is always on top of it, those devils.

I was just thinking to myself today after sitting in my friend's new restaurant Market Table the other night until the wee hours of the morning, how fabulous the dining is becoming on Carmine Street.

Market Table is a the super high end of the spectrum (sorry boys, it is) as most of the finds on the block would fall under Peter Meehan's 25&Under (yummy and cheap, yippee!)

NYT featured:

BarFry: a tempura spot owned by the Fatty/5 Ninth guys and run by our friend Jesse (yep the 22 year old is at the helm). It is a cute spot and the poboy lunch box sets are fabulous. Word is they are going to open the raw reciprocal nextdoor soon, that will make it even better because Josh, the chef (formerly of Sumile Sushi--yumm!) excels in the raw.

and

  • DEBORAH--totally fantastic and one of the best burgers in nyc.
  • DO HWA--korean food, decent, meh.
  • NOODLE BAR--dumplings are to die for. overpriced though.
  • MARKET TABLE--I am sure I will be able to do a blog posting in a month or so with about 45 pages of PR on how this is one of the best new restaurants of the year. Joey C just doesn't f around and Gabe doesn't to the 43rd power. You are going to hear about this one whether you want to or not.
The spots they didn't cover (that surprised me...)

  • YAMA--this sushi (that has Upper East and Union Square outposts) is some of the best in the city and super reasonable. It is small, cute, and the fish is fresh.
  • Kirara--another cozy yummy sushi place. ResidenPublish Postts of the hood love this spot.
  • Grey Dog--is there a better brunch/breakfast/late night combo in the hood? i am *shocked* this one wasn't included.
  • Mr. Dennehy's---this Irish bar has food that far surpasses the typical NY Irish joint.
Note: the photo above is of Carmine St. prior to Market Table and BarFry, back in the good old Shopsin's days.

Verdict: Carmine St. is of course totally appropriate!
